People must reverse their potential:

• loss of financial independence
• loss of access to cash
• loss of income
• loss of capability to live up to estate plan commitments, or alternately relieved of those obligations
• loss of capability to live up to charitable commitments, or alternately relieved of those obligations

To reverse that potential they must: 

• revert to as close as before the scheme came to light, by:
  • getting back the maximum possible
    • replacing sources of income and increasing cash reserves
    • replacing sources of funding estate planning and charitable commitments, or alternately relieved of those obligations
  • hold on to what they have now, by:
    • not losing any more
    • not letting this happen again

Yet, they must do this in their current state, with the uncertainty in the coming years, such as:

• how much have they lost / what will they end up with?
• will they be subject to ‘claw backs,” how much, when will they have to pay it out?
• will the IRS substantiate the theft loss deduction; or the amended return credit request, and the year in which they were taken?
• how much will they recover from bankruptcy estate?
• how much, when will they collect from SIPC?
• how much, when will they collect from homeowners policy?
• how much, when will they collect on lawsuits against auditors and personal advisors?

They are not aware that solutions exist, or that the "right ways" exist, if they attempt to do it on their own they will be hurt, 

• will not be able to get back on their feet, with the greatest level of reversibility, or as quickly, or for as long, or in the utmost reliable manner, nor at the lowest cost, nor realizing the lowest loss.
• will not be able to make their legacies whole, to get the greatest level of reversibility, nor as quickly, or for as long, or in the utmost reliable manner, nor at the lowest cost.

Here’s what’s at stake: potentially losing their financial independence and converting an otherwise positive legacy, into a legacy of "debt/unfulfilled commitments/regret/recriminations."
